Celebrating the College-bound 2019 Javits Junior Scholarship Program Winners

As the 2018-19 school year comes to a close, the Fund for Public Schools is grateful for the incredible commitment of all our partners to ensure every New York City public school student can fulfill their dreams. The Fund is pleased to announce that the Javits Juniors Scholarship Program will provide five $5,000 college scholarships to high school seniors graduating this week.

The Javits Juniors Scholarship Program, now in its second year, supports the college aspirations of high school students, while encouraging them to seek ways to improve their community through public service and innovative thinking.

The Scholarship Program was developed in partnership with the Javits Center, the New York Department of Education and the Fund for Public Schools, and made possible through philanthropic support from the Marian B. and Jacob K. Javits Foundation, along with event industry producers Emerald Expositions, Informa, and Reed Exhibitions.

As the son of immigrants who was born and raised on the Lower East Side, my father believed strongly in the power of public and private partnerships, as well as education, and this program captures the essence of his beliefs.
— Carla Javits, founding member of the Marian B. and Jacob K. Javits Foundation and daughter of Senator Javits

Participating students took part in an essay contest, entitled "Serving New York," which asked students to outline public policy ideas with the potential to improve the quality of life of New Yorkers. Students were asked to explain the reasons behind their goals as well as the steps necessary to make them a reality. Essays were judged on the tenants of logic and feasibility, originality and creativity, clarity of ideas, and structure.

The Scholarship Program encouraged applications from students at The Urban Assembly School for Design and Construction and High School of Fashion Industries. Both schools focus on providing high-quality Career and Technical Education (CTE) experiences to their students, offering rigorous academics, while also providing them with authentic work-based learning experiences that foster the skills necessary to succeed in careers. Programs at these schools prepare students to pursue careers in booming sectors of New York City’s economy. The scholarships will strengthen the bridge to successful careers for students, as well as high quality talent for a wide range of local employers.
